VMware Course Outline

 

Minimum Prerequisite:

Good knowledge in UNIX or Windows server administration.

Audience:

Experienced System Administrators preferably with UNIX

Objective:

• Identify the characteristics of the products in the VMware product line and when to use each product

• Install VMware ESX server in different environments (local storage and booting from a SAN etc.)

• Troubleshoot ESX Server problems

• Create and configure a virtual switch

• Modify the virtual switch for advanced switch capabilities including VLAN, NIC team, traffic shaping, and layer 2 security policies

• Connect a VMware ESX server to Fibre Channel SAN storage

• Create and modify VMFS datastores

• Connect a VMware ESX Server to NFS storage and to iSCSI storage

• Deploy a VirtualCenter implementation

• Describe VirtualCenter features

• Deploy a virtual machine

• Understand applications for VMware Converter Enterprise

• Migrate a Virtual Machine using either a standard migration or migration with VMotion

• Utilize Guided Consolidation capabilities

• Create and modify user permissions in VirtualCenter and in ESX server

• Restrict access to virtual machines using Web Access

• Given an ESX server, describe the technologies used for resource management

• Given a resource constrained system, make adjustments to improve performance

• Given an ESX environment, allocate resources using resource pools

• Given an ESX server environment, create and configure DRS clusters

• Monitor performance of a virtual machine including CPU, memory, disk, and network performance

• Given a VMware Infrastructure environment, develop virtual machine back-up and restore strategies

• Describe the basic operation of VMware HA and other supported high availability technologies

• Given an environment, determine whether VMware ESX Server could be installed

• Given a set of requirements, plan a VirtualCenter implementation

• Given a set of requirements, plan VI storage deployment
